The Grounds in EA SPORTS FC 27
A 100-player social hub with three districts, Clubs in the Clubhouse, Kickabouts, Amps, and Masteries.
The Grounds is FC 27’s social football playground: streets, cages, and stadiums in one persistent world. Up to 100 players share an instance. You spawn on the Terrace, walk into three districts, and take the same Pro into Kickabouts, small-sided games, Rush, and 11v11 Clubs. It is the biggest mode addition of the year, and it is the one with the hardest platform gate.
The Grounds, including Clubs, runs on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is not on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. Dual entitlement will put the current-gen client on your PS5 or Series console if you bought last-gen, but the mode itself never appears on last-gen hardware. Confirm that before you schedule a Clubs night. Early-access owners can walk the Terrace from 18 September; Standard owners wait for 25 September. See Early Access and Getting Started for the calendar.
The Terrace and the Clubhouse
You always arrive on the Terrace, the central plaza. Mentors, matchmaking boards, cosmetic stores, and the Clubhouse sit here on purpose so you are not dumped into a 4km hike to find Clubs. Clubs did not die. They live next to spawn. You can still play Leagues, Playoffs, and Club Tournaments; you no longer need a full squad online just to exist in the world. Drop-in 11v11 and Stadium Rush use access points around the map. Sideline play is live: you can spectate friends or scout a future Clubmate before you invite them.
Create or join a Club from the Clubhouse, then spend the rest of the session in districts. Progression on your Pro (AXP, Masteries, cosmetics) is shared across Grounds activities and Clubs. Free attribute resets are in this year: you can retune an Archetype without spending Grounds Coins, from the world menu, Clubhouse, or Rush lobby.
Three districts
Montclair is the French urban district: cages, hard turf, high-rises, Paris energy. Kylian Mbappé is the mentor you will bump into here most often. Cage 1v1s and tight Kickabouts live naturally in this geometry.
Zeiza is Buenos Aires by way of potrero culture: mixed European and Latin architecture, patchy grass, concrete courts, colour. Paulo Dybala anchors the Argentine street side of the map.
Parkside is suburban Britain: red brick, grass pitches, working-class terraces, murals (including a Shearer-scale goal record piece). Chloe Kelly and the Alex Hunter character both fit this district’s tone. Grass 11-a-side access and looser Kickabouts sit here.
Walk between districts on foot; the point of the mode is that you see other players’ matches on the way. Drop Kick Targets — neon rings that spawn in the world — let you volley while you travel, a small AXP drip without a queue.
Mentors
Four mentors teach the mode and then hand out challenges: Kylian Mbappé, Chloe Kelly, Paulo Dybala, and Alex Hunter (the The Journey character, back as an NPC). Early tasks are mechanical: how matchmaking, Amps, and Kickabouts work. Later tasks sit outside competitive matches so you have something to do when your Club is offline. Treat them as a guided tour, not a story mode you must finish before Clubs.
Small-sided and Rush
Queue 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and Rush from boards in each district. These are the skill check for the new gameplay defending: no AI centre-back will auto-tackle for you in a cage. Rewards are Grounds Coins and Archetype XP. Rush remains the five-a-side, fast-restart playlist; it is also reachable from stadium access points if you would rather not walk.
You do not need a pre-made party. Drop-in exists specifically because Clubs used to feel dead unless five friends were on. Bring Clubmates when you have them; do not sit in the Clubhouse waiting.
Kickabouts
Kickabouts are party rules on football movement. Launch-day list from EA’s Deep Dive:
- Bucket Ball — 2v2, basketball-style scoring into a bucket. Precision lobs and dunk-headers.
- Bocce — bowls with a football, closer to the jack wins.
- Balloon Ball — four-player dodgeball energy, keep your balloon alive / pop theirs.
- Team Keepaway — possession under pressure, no traditional goals.
- Goal Control — 1v1 on a court with multiple moving targets; score to claim them across three one-minute rounds.
- The Big Race — dribbling obstacle course, first over the line.
- Attacking Scenarios and Drop Kick Targets — drills in the world rather than a packed playlist.
Seasonal Kickabouts (EA has already shown Halloween Bulldog in previews) rotate in as Live Events. Shooting assist is often manual in these modes; passing may stay assisted. Read the pre-match overlay before you rage at a missed bucket.
AXP, Grounds Coins, Amps, Masteries
Archetype XP (AXP) levels the 13 classes your Pro shares with Clubs and Player Career: Shot Stopper, Sweeper Keeper, Progressor, Boss, Marauder, Disruptor, Recycler, Maestro, Creator, Spark, Magician, Finisher, Target. Matches, Kickabouts, and mentor challenges all feed AXP. Targeted consumables can dump AXP into one Archetype or a group (any midfield, for example).
Grounds Coins are the in-world currency for cosmetics and some progression items. EA’s published stance: every clothing item that can be bought with real money can also be earned with in-game currency. That does not mean every item is cheap or fast. It does mean the catalogue is not cash-only.
Amps are timed loadout items, four tiers, two families. Standard Amps (Tiers 1–2) boost attributes. Signature Amps (Tiers 3–4), including footballer-inspired pieces such as the Mbappé Tier 3 Amp in Ultimate boxes, add bigger attributes plus PlayStyles, PlayStyles+, and perks. You can run up to three Amps: two Standard and one Signature. Equip them on the Archetypes Amps tab. They expire; they are not Masteries.
Masteries are the long grind. Hit Level 10 on an Archetype and you unlock a permanent +1 to two attributes on every build. EA’s table:
| Archetype | Permanent boosts |
|---|---|
| Shot Stopper | GK Positioning, GK Reflexes |
| Sweeper Keeper | GK Handling, GK Diving |
| Progressor | Long Passing, Standing Tackle |
| Boss | Aggression, Strength |
| Marauder | Sliding Tackle, Sprint Speed |
| Disruptor | Stamina, Interceptions |
| Recycler | Defensive Awareness, Short Passing |
| Maestro | Reactions, Ball Control |
| Creator | Free Kick Accuracy, Vision |
| Spark | Crossing, Dribbling |
| Magician | Curve, Acceleration |
| Finisher | Composure, Finishing |
| Target | Balance, Jumping |
No attribute repeats across that table. Spreading AXP across classes is how you build a Pro, not only maxing Finisher.
Live Events and 11v11
Live Events rotate seasonal campaigns (Screaming Grounds and later drops) with unique Kickabouts, cosmetics, and AXP multipliers. 11v11 tournaments and Club competitions still use stadiums you enter from the world. Upgradeable Clubhouses and stadium cosmetics are the Clubs progression layer sitting beside your personal Masteries.
Ultimate and Ultimate Plus boxes include a Signature Sweatsuit, the Mbappé Tier 3 Amp, and 2x AXP for 10 matches. Those items are useless on last-gen. Career and FUT do not share Grounds Coins; your Career save and Ultimate Team club are separate economies. Licensed faces for the Pro experience overlap with the Players database, but your avatar is not a FUT card.
Walk the Terrace once, complete the mentor intro, queue a 3v3, then join or found a Club. Everything else is optional dressing on that loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Launch week answers on editions, The Grounds, Career, and Ultimate Team.
Which platforms is The Grounds on?
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 only. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch do not include The Grounds or Clubs. Dual entitlement upgrades the client, not last-gen feature parity.
Is Clubs gone in FC 27?
No. Clubs sits inside The Grounds via the Clubhouse next to the Terrace spawn. Leagues, Playoffs, Rush, and 11v11 remain. You no longer need a full squad online just to enter the world.
How many Amps can I equip?
Three: two Standard Amps and one Signature Amp. They are temporary. Masteries are the permanent Level 10 boosts that apply to every Archetype.
Do I have to spend real money on Grounds cosmetics?
EA says every clothing item sold for real money can also be earned with in-game currency (Grounds Coins). Time-limited or expensive items may still take a grind.
Who are the Grounds mentors?
Kylian Mbappé, Chloe Kelly, Paulo Dybala, and Alex Hunter. They introduce the mode and give challenges that feed AXP even when your Club is offline.
